Noritz Tankless Water Heater Standard Error Codes
Watch out: your water heater model may use different codes or may provide error codes that are not given here. Therefore you'll want to consult the manual for your specific heater.
Table of Noritz Tankless Water Heater Error Codes | |
Error Code | Meaning |
10 | Problem in gas combustion that causes the power level drop, while the combustion continues even after shutdown. Check for foreign materials found on the burner which is burning after gas combustion stops. To reset the error code 10, the power must be disconnected. If there is a recirculation loop use an aquastat to keep 10 degree differential. |
11 | Ignition Failure. Check that the gas valve oopens. Press power button to turn unit off, open a hot water faucet, turn unit back on. If the error code no longer flashes the problem is solved. Check for proper gas type (LP vs Natural gas), pressure, free flow through gas piping and valves, clean flame rod, no blockage in vent or vent connector, clean ignition plug. See Noritz Tankless Water Heater Seven Common Error Codes & Repairs [PDF] |
12 | Burner flame loss during operation, or Bad flame detection rod. Check for proper gas pressure, free flow, no blockage in vent. Clean ignitionplug & flame sensor rod. See Noritz Tankless Water Heater Seven Common Error Codes & Repairs [PDF] |
14 | Thermal fuse failure. Replace the thermal fuse. The thermal fuse is a white cord which wraps around the heat exchanger. Failure cause: scaled or dirty heat exchanger, Check for obstructed combustion air flow, clean proper burner operation. Check water quality for hardness or sediment that can clog the heat exchanger. Flush scaled heat exchanger. |
16 | Extremely high water temperature. Watch out: dangerous scalding hazard. See Noritz Tankless Water Heater Error Code 16 [PDF] See also Noritz Tankless Water Heater Seven Common Error Codes & Repairs [PDF] Check for sediment or scale clogging and clean or de-scale the unit using a cleaner such as vinegar or a de-scaler. Check manifold pressure adjustment. |
20 | High limit switch activated. Check or replace high limit switch. Check for scale and de-scale the heater. |
29 | High water level in neutralizer; neutralizer clogged. Check for clogged condensate drain; check for damp or wet or damaged water level sensor. Check for frozen neutralizer due to condensate clogging. See Noritz Tankless Water Heater Seven Common Error Codes & Repairs [PDF] |
31 | Inlet thermistor failure. Replace the inlet thermistor. |
32 | Outlet thermistor failure. Replace the outlet thermistor. |
33 | Heat exchanger thermistor failure. Replace the thermistor. |
43 | Invalid number, possibly mis-read for actual code 73. |
51 | Noritz Code 51: Gas Manifold Solenoid Failure A reader opined that for some models this code means Noritz manifold replacement is needed. See Error Code 59 below. |
59 | Low input BTU, insufficient gas supply, combustion problems such as obstructed exhaust flow. Check for adequate combustion air; check for blocked exhaust venting; clean fan motor & burner chamber. Check for a stuck exhaust damper or too-long or too many elbows in exhaust vent. Check that the heater is properly set for the elevation where installed. Occurs if natural gas pressure is below 5' WC or propane below 8' WC. |
61 | Fan motor failure. Check voltage to the fan motor. Replace faulty fan motor or faulty circuit board (that controls the fan). |
65 | Main flow control valve abnormality Check for blockage of main servo |
66 | Bypass flow control valve failure. Check for blockage of the bypass servo valve or replace the valve. |
70 | Circuit board fault. |
71 | Gas valve drive circuit abnormality. Water heater connected to battery backup, solar power, or generator and voltage supply is not stable. Check voltage delivered from circuit board. In area of unstable power, install a power surge protector. |
72 | Flame rod flame detection error: flame detected without proper ignition sequence. Check for proper electrical ground. Check for damaged circuit board. Check for damaged flame detection circuit / wires. |
73 | Circuit board setting error. Re-set the unit by disconnecting power. Review & correct circuit board programming / switches. Common cause: connection changed with power on. If failure persists replace the circuit board. See Noritz Tankless Water Heater Seven Common Error Codes & Repairs [PDF] |
F76 | Multi-system communication error. Disconnect power to reset the unit. Check cord connections. See Noritz Tankless Water Heater Seven Common Error Codes & Repairs [PDF] |
760 | Remote controller problem. Re-set the unit. Check for loose wire connections. Check that only 1 remote controller is connected to the heater. |
90 / 99 | Combustion gas alert. Check for proper gas flame color (light blue, yellow tips). Check for blocked flue, dirt on gas burner. Have a professional check the gas supply pressure. |
99 | Contact Noritz |
F90 | Comnbustion gas alert. Have a professional check the gas supply pressure. |
F99 | See Noritz Tankless Water Heater Seven Common Error Codes & Repairs [PDF] |

Either there is a leak and hot water is actually running somewhere or your water heater's control is faulty and UNSAFE.
Watch out: I would TURN OFF the system IMMEDIATELY and call for help from a licensed plumber who is familiar with Noritz water heaters.

thanks for the (unnecessarily impolite) comment, Anonymous.
The Noritz manuals we have at hand don't list error code 51 or we'd have included it.
Perhaps you can help us out by giving the Noritz water heater model and age for the unit whose manual lists error code 51 as 'replace manifold'.

As in the table above I suspect this code might be model-specific such as the Noritz Model NRC 98-OD.
On some Noritz models error Code 51: Gas Manifold Solenoid Failure
Please take a look at the data tag on your heater, attach a sharp photo of it as an image you can add to a comment, or just tell me the model number and I will dig into this further.
