The BlackBerry Desktop Manager is typically installed after you purchase a BlackBerry device. The Desktop Manager is the program that allows your BlackBerry to interact with your PC. When connected to your computer via the BlackBerry USB cable, the Blackberry syncs with programs such as Outlook, using the Desktop Manager as a conduit. Original title: Blackberry Desktop Manager. System requirements
- BlackBerry Device Software 4.2 and up, excluding BlackBerry 10.
- Intel® compatible 1 GHz or higher processor
- 512 MB of RAM
- USB 1.1 or higher USB port
- Screen resolution of 1024x768 or greater
- 100 MB of free hard disk space for typical installation
- Windows® XP SP3 or later, Windows Vista®, Windows 7 or Windows 8
- Microsoft® .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 or an active Internet connection
- iTunes version 7.7.1 or later, or Windows Media® Player version 10 or later, for music synchronization
Download and install
- On your computer, go to http://us.blackberry.com/software/desktop.html.
- Find For PC Users and select Download for PC.
- Choose to sign up for BlackBerry services, click Download, and run the file that downloads.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
Backup data
- On your computer, open the BlackBerry Desktop Software.
- Connect the device to a computer using a USB cable.
- In the BlackBerry Desktop Software, click Device.
- Click Back up.
- Click Full Backup.
- Click Back up.
- Click Close once the backup is complete.
Restore data
- On your computer, open the BlackBerry Desktop Software.
- Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable.
- In BlackBerry Desktop Manager, click Device.
- Click Restore.
- Select the backup file.
- Click All device data and settings. To restore data to built-in media storage, select the Files saved on my built-in media storage checkbox.
- If the backup file is encrypted, enter the password and click Restore.
Transfer data to a new device
- On your computer, open the BlackBerry Desktop Software.
- Connect the old device to the computer using a USB cable.
- In BlackBerry Desktop Manager, click Device.
- Select Switch Devices.
- Choose the old device from the list.
- Check the information you want to transfer such as Data or Third party applications.
- Click Next.
- When prompted, connect the new BlackBerry device to the computer using the USB cable.
- Click Next.
- When the transfer is complete, the Desktop Software will alert you to disconnect the device.
Set up calendar and contacts
- Open BlackBerry Desktop Software.
- Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable.
- Click Organizer.
- Click the Configure Settings button.
- Select an app and click Setup.
- Select a desktop organizer app and click Next.
- Select sync options and click Next.
- If applicable, select Microsoft Outlook options, and click Next.
- Click Finish.
- Repeat steps 4 through 8 for the remaining BlackBerry smartphone organizer apps.
- Click OK to close the Select Device application window.
- Make sure at least one type of organizer data has the check box is selected and click the Sync button.
Add or remove apps
- Open the BlackBerry Desktop Software.
- Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable.
- On the top left hand side, click Applications.
- To install built in applications or languages, scroll to and click the Plus icon to install that application or language.
- To install 3rd party apps:
- Click Import files at the top right hand side of the screen.
- Navigate to the application you want to add.
- Select the [application].alx file.
- Click Open.
- Make sure the app displays in the Handheld Application Selection list.
- To remove an application or language, click the X beside the application or language.
- Click Apply at the bottom right hand corner.
- Wait for the Updating Applications screen to complete. During the installation the device may reboot.
- When finished, make sure the application appears in the list of installed applications.
Update device software
- Open BlackBerry Desktop Software.
- Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable.
- On the home screen of the BlackBerry Desktop Software, click Update.
- Choose from the following:
- To keep a backup file of your smartphone data and settings, select the Back up your device data checkbox.
- To encrypt your backup data, click Encrypt backup file.
- If you want to receive an email when an updated version of BlackBerry Device Software is available, select the Keep me subscribed to email notifications checkbox and enter your email address.
- Select Install update. Do not disconnect the device while it is being updated as it could make the device unusable. The update process can take over 30 minutes.
Reload device software
- Open BlackBerry Desktop Software.
- Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable.
- In BlackBerry Desktop Manager, click Device.
- Select Update My Device.
- Select View other versions and choose the software version you wish to reload.
- Select the Back up your device data checkbox. To encrypt your backup data, click Encrypt backup file.
- Select Install update. Do not disconnect the device while it is being updated as it could make the device unusable. Keep in mind, the update process can take over 30 minutes.
